Dear Margy, Megan and Michael, We were very sorry to hear your sad news. Though we have not met your dad (granddad), we know through your many stories and activities what a special man he was and can only imagine the void you must be feeling at this time. May your wonderful memories fill your hearts in the days and weeks ahead and may you find comfort in them.

Having spent several summers during my childhood with the Silverthorns at their homes in Barrie and North Bay, I have accumulated many wonderful memories of my Uncle Jack. Uppermost are: the smell of his spotless garage with only his little red trailer in residence, watching Margy and me bodysurfing in Lake Nippissing prior to a summer storm, cutting dowels and assembling the frame for our calendar project, telling jokes to the family and laughing with us, and grabbing Aunt Dorothy for a kiss when he came home each day for lunch. The memory I cherish the most, however, is Uncle Jack's greeting each time we reconnected. Upon my arrival he would say, "Ah, Kelly McDaid", wrap me in a big hug, and give me his most winning smile. He made me feel welcomed, loved and safe. Uncle Jack may have left this world but, for me, he lives on in the vivid imagery of those magical childhood summers.

To Jack's Family: I well remember Jack, having played for 2 years or so with Branch 66, before I went on to the Toronto Police band. Jack was a real gentleman, as were all the '66 members, and had a great love for the great highland bagpipe. I used to bump into him while working at Queen's Park during the 1980's when he was out for a noon hour walk. Glad to see he lived a long and rewarding life. Best regards, Dave Gomme

I'll never forget Jack as the man who taught me to play the bagpipes. He was 80 years old at the time, and was not only still a capable instructor but also able to continue marching in pipe parades for years to come. He was extremely patient, dedicated, and forgiving as a teacher and mentor. He'll be remembered fondly every time I pick up my pipes.

I've know Jack for almost 35 years, his wife Dorothy almost as long. Jack came to me at first as a patient. I had been a chiropractor for a whole year at that point. We got to know each other over the years. He became a trusted friend, not just a patient. In all my years of practice I've never know a person to be as punctual, and to never forget his appointments.
Jack's disposition was always so friendly and happy. I can still here his voice when he'd call me 'Doc', or that funny little laugh of his. Jack was my oldest and longest active patient, I'll miss him and our monthly visits...sometimes I think I got more from the visits than I gave.
Jack was always such an active man, with his sports, music and family. I was always mesmerized by his stories and enjoyed his visits with me. After 35 years of know Jack, I feel like a huge hole in my heart. I will miss him for the wonderful man, and friend he was.
God bless him and my condolences to Dorothy and the rest of his extended family.

My deepest and most profound condolences on the passing of a gentleman held in the highest regards by his beloved family. Over 35 years of close friendship with Margy I have had the privilege of listening to many "Jack" stories: the man as husband to Dorothy, father and grandfather, friend (I recollect some Cooney travelogues). Jack the piper, the curler, the player of games, the traveler, the wearer of funny hats in Disney....and on it goes, stories shared through friends' tributes on these very pages. One of Jack's greatest legacies is his family- the gifts he shared through his very presence. May you find comfort in one another as you navigate these choppy waters, and may your Dad and Grandpa guide you from afar. Much love, Gail (and Don)

Jack and I were fellow curlers at Unionville Curling Club. I also worked very closely for several years with Jack's son John.
While Jack and I were only curling acquaintances, we always said hello to each other over the past 30 years whenever we met at the Club. As time went on and Jack became a bit more unsteady on the ice, I had a little chat with him about whether he should consider wearing some sort of head protection whenever he curled. While I wasn't sure whether our chat had sunk in or not, lo and behold, the next time I saw him curling he had acquired a head protector. Given that he continued to curl into his 92nd year, my advice served him well.
I also hired Jack several times to pipe the curlers onto the ice for a variety of bonspiel finals. He always did a terrific enthusiatic job although I'm sure he would have liked to perform a more elaborate concert than the few minutes we allotted to him. However, he did seem to thoroughly enjoy the wee dram so I guess his time was not too wasted.
My thoughts go out to Jack's family, especially John. I am unable to attend Jack's service this weekend but I will be thinking of him fondly.
