In mid-August of 1981 Marg and I spent a delightful couple of days with the Garries at their Gull Lake cottage. Driving home in the evening, as darkness crept over the country-side, I noticed my car lights were dimming — a sure sign of a failed alternator. I saw the shine of bright lights just behind a hill and thought there might be a service station there. But ... not the case, it was just the well-lit intersection of Bloomington Side Road and Hwy 30. Staying on Bloomington and drifting past the lights, I saw there were no houses, no lights from buildings, just black night all around — except for one lit window in a solitary house.
Hoping to access a phone, I drove into the driveway by the 1 candle-light power left in the headlights ... and saw a lone, seated female through the living-room window.
"There's no way this young lady is going to answer the door!"
But she did ... and upon hearing of our plight, invited us in and made coffee. I had hoped there would be a motel somewhere close by — but there wasn't. I hoped the Rohowskys who lived on Bloomington near Yonge Street, and whom I knew from YSO, might be home — they weren't. Then ... remembering Mr. Sanderson in Stouffville — my Grade 8 teacher — I phoned and explained where we were and why.
"Are there any motels down your way?"
"Nothing at all in the area. But if you can get towed down here to the Canadian Tire Store, I'll meet you there. It's just around the corner from us. I know the Manager, and they should be able to fix your car in the morning."
"Great! We've got our sleeping bags with us and we could sleep in the car ... or maybe we could camp out on your verandah or in your yard."
"Don't worry, I'll think of something."
Our hostess had a friend with a tow truck. He arrived promptly, put the Volvo 'on the hook', and dropped it and us at the Stouffville Canadian Tire parking lot — right beside Mr. Sanderson's car.
"Just bring what you need, you're staying with us tonight!"
We awoke the next morning in the beautiful bedroom we'd been allowed to use, and were fed a nourishing breakfast. That's when we found out that Mrs. Sanderson had graciously given up her own room for us!
Mr. Sanderson took me to meet the Manager just as the store opened.
"Don't worry, we'll take it in right away. Give the Service Department a call in an hour or so to see where we're at."
We retired to the house and chatted for awhile on the back deck before calling.
"The alternator's shot. We've ordered a new one and it should be here shortly. Should be finished around noon or so."
It wasn't! We lunched on ham sandwiches with the Sandersons.
"They sent the wrong part. Should be ready about 3."
It wasn't! We toured Mr. Sanderson's large vegetable garden, and his second garden a short distance away; we saw Beryl Avenue, named after Mrs. Sanderson whose family had been long-time Stouffville residents; we feasted on freshly-picked cherry tomatoes; we chatted ... and chatted ... until the car eventually was ready — around 5:30.
In spite of the car problems and the repair problems, we'd had a delightful experience with the Sandersons — they'd made us feel right at home. What wonderful people! We felt honoured. And we were grateful.

I was blessed to be assigned to Mr. Sanderson's 8th grade class in September of 1951. Memories of the care, concern and compassion he showed me, in addition to the far above average educational activities he provided, have remained with me all these years. My father had been killed in a car accident in March of that year and I was lost. With Mr. Sanderson's support during those troubling months helped me (a twelve year old) to begin working through my sadness. Perhaps most improtantly for me, my daily contact with him made it possible for me to go home after school and make my mother's day a little better It will be impossible for me to attend his service as I am in South Caroling. Mrs. Sanderson and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers as they say good-bye to a loving husband and father but most of all, an excetional human being who left his mark on many, many others with whom he came in contact. Mr. Sanderson was a good, principled, and compassionate gentleman, a loving husband and family-man, an excellent Teacher and Principal, and a great friend. As my Gr 8 Teacher, he had a positive and profound influence on my life --- an influence that was amplified on the several occasions we met in the 62 years since those school days. I know we adored him, and I know from his declarations that he carried exceptionally good memories of our 51/52 class at Kent Senior Public School. Bud Sanderson had a zest for living ... he enjoyed a great professional career and a long life ... he was a positive influence for many, many young lives and for his fellow-professionals. I remember him fondly while sadly celebrating his Graduation to whatever lies beyond. My condolences to Beryl and the family. George Jardine

Mr. Sanderson was my grade 8 teacher at Kent Senior Public School. We all liked him very much as he was an excellent teacher and had a great sense of humour. I will always remember one day when we were studying fractions; one of boys didn,t know what inverted meant. Mr. Sanderson told him to take off his glasses and come to the front of the room, Mr. S. then took him by the waist and turned him upside down! Then he said - now you know what inverted means. I still have several photographs taken on a field day at Kent but not sure they could be e-mailed. If you are interested, I could try.
A very wonderful man and teacher. Please accept my condolences. Sandra Florence

Dearest Auntie Beryl, cousin Peter & Jane,I'm so sorry to hear about Uncle Bud. All our lives were so touched by this incredibly special man. Funny, witty, and so loving. He's at peace now with Uncle Alan and Mom Betty. Thinking of all the Sandersons during this sad time but remembering all the really great times we had together as family. With much love ...
