Peacefully, just shy of his 85th birthday and, recently predeceased by his darling wife of 60 years, Clara (Kay). Cherished father of Lynne George (Barry) of Brockville, Lisa Bowditch (Scott) of Rideau Lakes, and Mark George (Tania) of Markham. Much-loved Grandpa of Jessica (Peter), Tyler (Emily), Tanner (Alyssa), Madison, Troy, Mason, Mikayla and Connor. Predeceased by his sister Patricia Birchall and parents Stella and Reuben George.
David was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He spent his formative years in boarding school and moved around frequently to remote locations in Newfoundland, Labrador, and Ontario with his family while his father was involved in the building of hydroelectric dams. David acquired his private pilot's license at the age of 23 and enjoyed flying Piper Cherokees for many years. He attended Horton Academy, the University of New Brunswick, and eventually Ryerson, where he graduated as a Certified Engineering Technologist. Later in life, he went on to earn an MBA at the University of Toronto.
He married Clara in 1963, and in 1972 they relocated with their three small children to Ontario for a more challenging career. David was President of Imagineering Limited and was instrumental in the design and launch of the Global Television Network. He had a long and storied career in Broadcasting, and was involved in many key projects bringing television to countries all over the world. He was president of The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) in the nineties. David was an avid Ham Radio Operator and enjoyed connecting with people all over the world, often facilitating communications during earthquakes and other natural disasters. V0IDS and VE3EU were two of his long-time call signs.
David’s favorite pastime was sailing, spending many summers on Lake Ontario and vacationing year after year in the Thousand Islands region with his kids and grandkids. He owned several boats over his lifetime – Jezebel, Whisper, Baccalieu, and finally Somersault. He was a member of The Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club as well as the National Yacht Club.
David will be fondly remembered by his sister’s daughters September and Brooke Birchall, his brother-in-law Maxwell Cater (Mavis), his dear cousin Edda-Lou Burry, and many nieces and nephews across multiple provinces.
David and Clara spent their last years at Amica Swan Lake where they were lovingly cared for with dignity and grace. Special thanks go out to all Amica staff, but especially Sonia, Juliet, Glenda, Tracy, Erika, and Sona for their extraordinary patience and kindness over these last few months.
David will forever be missed by his private caregiver, Marhea. The family cannot thank her enough for providing love and companionship to both David and Clara for the past several years. Her contribution to their happiness and quality of life in their final years will forever be cherished.
