I was privileged to have been touched by greatness in the person of Mr. Ledger. He was my Middle School Math teacher at Zion Heights some forty plus years ago. Under his tutelage our small group of bright but ordinary pubescent middle schoolers became a national force with which to reckon. For years, Zion Heights regularly ranked nationwide in math contests. It was a streak so remarkable that it aroused suspicions of misconduct. In truth, it was a testament to the value added by a great teacher to a mix of capable but typical students that could have been found in districts anywhere around the country. Something extraordinary was happening in Zion and I am grateful to have been there when it was touched by Mr. Ledger’s presence. It opened a window of possibility that has stayed with me to this day. We were just kids, unaware of our potential and without Mr. Ledger, it would have remained unrealized, and my vision may have remained low on the horizon. But that experience, to be a member of a team that transcends the cloud of obscurity and touches the stratosphere where champions reside made me wonder about what else was possible with discipline, training and masters to guide the way. In a hippy-dippy time of open planned classrooms it was Mr Ledger that drilled us every day to memorize multiplication tables. There was no time to waste in a math contest, or in life, and things that are trivial should take trivial amounts of time so that the mind is free to attack the bigger problems. Had we been allowed calculators, I am sure Mr. Ledger would have still insisted that our minds master numbers like a violinist does her scales. I remember those steely grey eyes, and severe, close cropped Shenandoah beard which meant we put our middle school mischief aside because there was important work to do and little time to do it. Mr. Ledger exuded purpose. Something, I felt, that was in short supply. It made sense then, when I learned later that he was a man of the cloth and dedicated years to his ministry in Uganda. Purpose with warmth and an occasional hard-won laugh which made it all the more precious when it came. It was a gift to find you again years later, still training students for success and ask your advice on how to help my son succeed in his math contests. And it is a gift that my niece today participates in the Spirit of Math, created very much in your image. Thank you for your well-lived life, imbued with purpose enough, to fill many souls with the spirit of math and lift eyes high above the horizon. In gratitude, David Debow. Zion Heights 1980 - 1982.

Dear Lorin, Kim, John Blair and Mary,
We just learned of Charles' passing and are sorry to have missed seeing you earlier this month. We have so many happy memories of your Dad (and Mom for that matter). Time spent together at Christmases in Markham immediately comes to mind. As I reflect more deeply, I think of their openness and influence as I, along with yourselves, navigated those awkward teenage years. I will be forever grateful for that. Your dad lived such a full and wonderful life. May we all find inspiration from it.
Sincerely, and with fondest memories on behalf of the Foster family,
Mark Foster

Mr Ledger was my grade 9 math teacher at Zion Heights in North York. Perhap my favourite teacher he was kind patient and always understending. Whenever I needed extra help he never hesitated and waited around after school to offer help. I reached out to him back in the early 90's and he was kind enough to respond via letter. I am truly sad to hear of his passing and remember him fondly even till this day and into my 61st year. He made such a positive impression in my life and for that I am grateful. Rest in peace Charles until we meet again....

I am so saddened to hear about Mr. Ledger's passing. He was my math teacher at Zion in grades 7 and 9, and inspired me to become a teacher as well. His love for learning, and care for his students was an inspiration. Sending my heartfelt condolences to his family. May his memory be a blessing.

I was in Mr. Ledger's math and geography classes at Zion Heights JHS from 1983-1985. He was an extraordinary teacher, and his legacy lives on through his thousands of students and Spirit of Math! I sent my oldest to Spirit of Math where he learned through the methods Mr. Ledger made legendary.

Mr Ledger taught me Grade 8 and Grade 9 math at Zion. He was truly one of the best teachers I ever had. His math drills were legendary, and he knew that we could reach a class average that was high enough to introduce us to a new drill - and the funny thing was - we wanted to get to the new drill :). He was kind, calm, smart and just an absolutely wonderful teacher. It’s been about 45 years since he was my teacher and I still remember him. What a testament to him.
I hope you all find comfort with memories and the impact he had on so many of us.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of this wonderful teacher. I was a terrible math student and he patiently helped me to understand the concepts. I would have failed math without him. He also had an incredible sense of humour. My friend and I used to hang out with him at lunch and when he was on yard duty. When I later became a teacher myself, I always tried to treat my students with the same patience and respect. What an incredible impact. He will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear of Charlie's death. I felt we were family friends with this wonderful Ledger family for years. I knew him best as an Assistant Minister at Grace Church and as leader of it's Youth Group for many years when my then teenagers were members. I with my late husband Gord spent many hours with both he and Gwen at various occasions and at our home for our annual Christmas party. I was pleased to meet with Nancy a few times, especially I believe at his 80th Birthday?
I am so sorry I cannot be at the Visitation due to various issues, but my prayers will be with all.
He will be sadly missed by all who had the honour of knowing him --my sincere sympathy to all the Ledgers. May Charlie rest in the peace he so richly has earned.
Love Joan (Lever)

Mr. Ledger was my grade eight math teacher at Zion Heights. This was the 80’d, so when Opening Day for the Blue Jays came around at Exhibition Stadium, our school emptied out - these were the days when you could get $4 bleacher seats from Shoppers Drug Mart. But that year I wasn’t really doing too hot with my grades in Math, so I made the responsible decision to not skip school to attend the game and instead attended my math class with Mr. Ledger. Who - once he saw there were only a handful of us in class - decided we should just watch the game together instead of having class and wheeled a TV into the room! lol a very fond memory of a wonderful man and teacher. My condolences to all who loved him. - Jennifer Deon, St. John’s NL

What a remarkable man and teacher he was. He was one of those teachers who affected me in such an important way because he taught me that getting the basics right unlocked a whole new world of learning that made what I thought was beyond my grasp very attainable. I am so grateful to have been taught by him.

While I only had the pleasure to meet him a handful of times, unforgettable is definitely the one word I would say describes him so well. And yes, the twinkle in his eyes for his grandchildren was evident on those occasions that I was blessed to spend birthday celebrations with the family. But by far, my favourite memory was watching first hand just how much he loved his “figgy pudding” after celebrating Christmas with Steve and Mary and singing the traditional Christmas carol, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. His spirit lives on in his family left behind. Much love!
