Obituary of Barbara Ann Saunders

Forever Loved, Never Forgetten ... 

Barbara Ann Saunders 

April 8th, 1939 - December 25th, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Ann at Markham-Stouffville Hospital on the morning of December 25th, 2023. 

She was predeceased by her loving husband Steve, in November 2022, and missed him every day until her passing. Ann is survived by her children, Bruce(Joanne) and Cathy(Andre); her grandchildren, Stephen, Michael and Ava; her sister Carole(Bob) along with  many nieces and nephews. 

Ann, eldest daughter of the late Jim and Hazel(nee Mears), was born and raised in Markham. She attended Franklin Public School, and later, Markham District High School where she was involved in many clubs including Student Council, Marching Band and Glee Club. In 1955, her final year of high school, she was “crowned” the first May Queen at the new MDHS. According to the local paper, her escort was Steve Saunders. 

In 1959, she married Steve and built a life together with him and their two children in Markham. 

When her children started school, Ann went back to work part-time as a secretary at Convey Construction and then joined the York Region District School Board until her retirement in 1998. 

After retirement, Ann took great pride in spending time with her grandchildren. Additionally, she was an avid card player and enjoyed playing with the “Bridge Club” ladies weekly.  

Ann will be missed dearly by all those who knew her.

Family and friends will be received at the Dixon-Garland funeral home, 166 Main Street North (Markham Road) Markham. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20th, 2024 from 11am until time of service in the chapel at 12 noon. Reception to follow.
