Obituary of Martha Alvena Grant
Grant, Martha Alvena -
Martha Alvena lived a long and full life. She grew up in a large family in Eastern Ontario and she often told stories of the fun and music she shared with her brothers and sisters. She married Joseph Grant. After the wedding they went, for a year, to Lemon Creek British Columbia where her husband was teaching in a Japanese internment camp. She made many friends in the camp. She and her husband then moved to Toronto and started a family. Eventually they moved to Box Grove where they raised five children. There were many things that gave her enjoyment in life. Family, friends, and neighbours were very important to her and her hospitable home was often a place where people gathered. She also loved music. As a girl she sang in church choirs and concerts with her sisters. She learned, from her father, to play the fiddle and as a young person, played with her sister Lila (on guitar) at local square dances. Church was a big part of her life and she attended regularly until a few weeks before her death. She was also an avid gardener and into her mid-nineties was able to maintain her many perennial beds. She was looking forward to the bulbs coming up this spring. She will be missed but we feel fortunate to have had her with us for these many years.
Martha passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2023 in her 101st year and was predeceased by her dear husband Joseph Grant of 65 years. She was the mother of Joseph (Catherine), Sylvia Grant (Anthony Zamojc) Ruth Lamberti (Carlo, deceased), Paul (Yaima), and Robert (Heather). Martha was predeceased by parents Herman and Pauline Keller and siblings Arnold, Hulda, Fred, Adeline, Lila, Albert, and Alma.
