Obituary of Anthony Ligorio Fernandes

Passed away peacefully on August 1st, 2021 at Bethany Lodge Unionville, shortly after his 88th birthday and one year, one month following the passing of his beloved wife Rita Martha.

Anthony is predeceased by his parents Alex Xavier and Rosaria Santanna, his siblings Dominic, Mary,  Dolorosa, and daughter Audrey. He is remembered fondly by his brother Ralph, Lionel, sister Bernadette,  children Lorraine (Tim), late Audrey (Peter), Alexandria (Alan), and grandchildren Connor, Spencer, Carly, Harrison, Mitchell and Emma.

Anthony was born in Karachi and raised in Aldona, Goa. He excelled in a variety of sports including field hockey, bowling, tennis and badminton. His love of travel inspired him to see various parts of the world, however it was family that brought him his greatest joy.

Anthony & Martha married in 1960 and were blessed with three beautiful daughters. In 1970 they made a life-changing decision to move to Canada. This past year, they celebrated 61 years of marriage and 51 years in Canada. He was a devoted husband, caring father and proud grandfather.

Anthony will be deeply missed by his family and friends and will always be remembered as a gentle and humorous man.  He was committed to his profession as a shipping manager at Hastings for over 25 years.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the compassionate care from all the staff at Bethany Lodge Unionville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. All donations may be made via the links in the left panel.

Friends and family can pay their respects at the Dixon-Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main Street Markham North, Markham for viewing on Wednesday August 4, 2021 from 07:00 to 09:00 PM and attend St Patrick’s Parish, 5633 Highway 7, Markham for a mass on Thursday August 5, 2021 at 10:30 AM. A burial to follow will be held at Christ the King Cemetery, 7770 Steeles Ave E, Markham.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the capacity at Dixon-Garland will be limited to 30 people at a time. We please ask that social distancing rules are respected and masks are worn at the funeral home, church and cemetery.
