Like my siblings, Patti and Chris, I have so many wonderful memories of visiting Aunt Liz and Uncle Dean, the most exciting being when Jim and Pam took us for a ride in Uncle Dean’s convertible. You’d have to ride a wild roller coaster these days to match the thrill that it was for me!! I smiled when I saw Jim’s grad photo, because it was proudly displayed at the house (though Skippy beat him out for prime location :) ). Wish that we were geographically closer as I recall our family’s excitement that Jim and Pam were having a baby! Mom (Bev Gartlan), Patti and I embroidered a comforter, and the baby stuff was passed on. (Later, when Mom discovered that Jim was using the “Nursery Queen “ baby scales to weigh fish, she requested it back). I have it in my kitchen now, and it brings me joy, especially because of the “Fish Tale!” I always makes me think of Mom and Jim, but especially of the unique bond that family brings.
When going through some family photos, we discovered one of Jim and Dad (Jerry) looking VERY spiffy in suits, obviously an important occasion, that points to their special relationship. Because of the relatively small age difference, they were much more than uncle and nephew, a bond that was also deepened by their shared love of hunting and fishing. Both Mom and Dad treasured family, so when Jim moved back to southern Ontario and they were able to be in touch and visit with him and Jan more frequently, it meant a lot to them. As a daughter, I am grateful for the joy that this relationship added to their lives. I’m sad that COVID kept me from visitation and the service because I would have liked to express my deepest sympathy to both Jan and Sean in person, and to meet your families
I pray that you would find comfort in learning more about Jim and what he meant to so many others as people share stories and memories with you. Tribute to a life well lived.
Love,
Susan (Gartlan) Ikeda

JIm's Family : We will surely miss Jim at our weekly fly tying sessions at the Franklin . He was kind and generous and funny and contributed a great deal to the conversations and laughs during our winter evenings . We all loved his moose sausage which he shared after a successful hunting season . It was shock to hear of the news and I wish Jan and all the family my sincere condolences .

Jan, Sean and Craig and Family,
Our deepest condolences on your loss. My family was very close to Jim’s parent’s, Liz and Dean Follis. We saw them frequently as we grew up. My earliest memory of Jim dates back to the early 70’s when he and Pam took my sister and I on a long trip on the Toronto subway. We enjoyed the city and the scenery very much; it was very exciting and different from where we lived in Peterborough.
I used to go fishing with my Dad, Jerry when I was young, and frequently heard the story of Jim’s first fishing trip with my Dad. As happens many times, the fish weren’t biting and Jim was more interested in swimming than fishing. (I’ve been there too). But Jim kept at it and fished many more times over the years with my Dad. They both became very good fishermen!
I always enjoyed seeing Jim and Jan at family gatherings. Jim was always kind and always had a nice story to share. He will most certainly be missed.

I have so many wonderful memories of my cousin Jim over the years. Although My Dad was the youngest of the Gartlan Family Jims Mom and Dad ( uncle Dean and Aunt Liz) were a constant part of our family growing up. My mom , Dad and sister and I traveled to Dryden on March break years ago. We had a wonderful visit with the Follis family.... I don't remember but I am sure there was fishing involved.... that was a sport he and my Dad Jerry both loved.
I am grateful to be able to have kept in touch with Jim and Jan over the years.
Jan , Sean , Craig and families. I am so sorry for your loss and Jim will be sadly missed.

Bob and I would like to send deep sympathies to the family of Jim Follis on his sudden passing. We had known him for many years and will miss him. Jim and Bob were roommates at the University of Waterloo and often drove to class in Jim’s little MG (and over to Toronto to raid his parents’ freezer.) Visits from Pam meant some great meals, and occasional pub crawls and hockey games were activities shared with classmates.
Jim got a job at Dryden High School teaching Math after University and 3 years later he called Bob and told him that there was a job teaching English for him! When Judith came to Dryden High School, she and Pam enjoyed reading, cooking and crafting together and Jim and Bob went hunting, shooting and fishing and snow machining together. Jim and Bob and Judith spent their entire teaching careers at Dryden High School and our families enjoyed socializing with friends. We all loved the great outdoors.
We all worked actively in OSSTF, and Judith remembers lots of winter road trips to meetings in small communities for meetings! Jim was often sitting in the front passenger seat navigating and telling stories.
When Jim retired and eventually left Dryden, we lost touch for a little while but reconnected and enjoyed catch-up phone calls and laughs.
Jim was a kind and funny man who was always generous with his help and knowledge. He will be greatly missed. Our deep sympathies also go out to his family.

We remember good times with Jim when we were visiting him and my sister Pam in 1987 in Dryden with our 3 kids.
Jim organized a canoe trip to White Otter Lake where we made our way to the famous log castle of the King of White Otter Lake, camping along the way. We had great weather and a fabulous trip and remember it well after all these years.

I first met Jim as a young teacher in Dryden in the mid 1980’s. He had a heart of gold and always went out of his way to make you feel welcome and help you as needed. There were many of us (Karl,Wayne,Brian,Kenny,Cliff, Rick, Alvin and a few others) that made many trips over the years to Boyer and Stormy Lake, south of Dryden for trout fishing. Jim was always the navigator, advice giver, fisher expert and cocktail mixer ..watch out ! And it made for such a good time ... there was great fishing, but also lots of laughs and stories that I will never forget. I think about a fishing hole he showed me on Wabigoon many years ago that I still actively fish today with my adult fisher daughter ... nice walleye almost every time. Jim touched many students teaching math over the years ... many students did not find math easy, and he had a way of ensuring that they learned the math and felt good about their ability to do so.
My condolences to all family and extended family in Jim’s life ...

Jim was a good friend of my Dad’s (Stuart Calvert). I remember him well! I worked as a receptionist at DHS and he always teased me. Dad enjoyed his company and they were always sharing stories in their Staff Room.
Sudden loss is very difficult and I am sending my condolences to his family. He was a great guy. Thoughts and prayers.

Jim was a gentle and quietly good natured , much valued friend - one of the first I got to know in 2006 after joining the Franklin Club . I was privileged to have him join me for a wonderful adventure to the foothills in Alberta where we chased Cutthroat Trout and later, big Rainbows on the Bow River. Jim caught some beauties . My deepest condolences Janet and Family . I am going to really miss seeing Jim at Franklin .

I can't tell you how very sad I am for you, Jan - and all of Jim's Family. He had a wonderful sense of humour - and even put up with Tillie's inquisition when you were dating him. Your travels around the world have hopefully given you a ton of great memories that will keep you going. How wonderful it was for both of you to find each other later in life. Truly - a gift.
Love - and hugs always
