Obituary of Nancy Scott

Nancy Marion Scott (nee Barr) With great sadness, the Scott family announces the passing of Nancy Marion Scott at Markham Stouffville Hospital on Monday, August 19th, 2013 at the age of 85. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by family members, her many friends, and all who knew her. She left us peacefully, surrounded and comforted by family. Daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Alfred T. Barr (1961) and Elva Marion Barr (Jardine, 1961). Predeceased by her brothers, Noel and Ferg, and sister, Betty. Beloved wife of the late Dr. James R. Scott (2003). Loving mother of Brian (Gail) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, David (Debbie Gauthier-Scott) of Calgary, Alberta, Elizabeth J. (David Bishop) of Toronto, and Geoffrey (Elizabeth M.) of Newmarket. Proud grandmother to Allison (Damien) Valdock of Thunder Bay, Geoffrey (Adrienne) Scott of Toronto, Andrea (Nathan) Williams of Guelph, Donna of Thunder Bay, Erin (Adam) Jose of Calgary, Emily (Brent) Schroderus also of Calgary, Leslie of Calgary, Benjamin Clarke and Byron Clarke of Toronto, and Jennifer, Michael, Stephanie, and Christina of Newmarket. Caring great grandmother to Charlotte, Viola, Kyra, and Olivia. Born in 1928 in Brantford, Ontario, Nancy's family then lived in Peterborough, St. John's, Newfoundland, Arthur, Ontario, Toronto and Penetanguishene as her father was called to minister for the Presbyterian Church. A graduate in philosophy from the University of Toronto (1949), Nancy worked at Neighborhood Workers in Toronto for one year before marrying her "best buddy", Jim. The couple settled in Markham, where they made their home. Nancy played an active role in her church and many Markham community organizations. A member of the St. Andrews Church choir for 44 years and the Ontario Presbyterian Chorus for six years, she only stopped when physical limitations held her back. Founder of the Iona Quilters at St. Andrews, she designed and helped create many quilts, two of which are displayed at St. Andrews today. Nancy volunteered for many years with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Markham Fair. An oil, then watercolour artist, she created dozens of works of art as painting was a large part of her life. For over 25 years, she belonged to the Markham Group of Artists. The family would like to thank the staff at Amica at Swan Lake, the doctors and staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital, and especially Nancy's caregiver, Kelly, for their compassionate care.
