I remember Uncle John visiting England with Fran when I was a little girl and Canada seemed a world away ! At 17 for my 18th birthday present I was able to board a Boeing 747 and visit this far away destination. I have great memories from this time and as they say in Canada , I had a ball! Uncle John took me to a nightclub and we had great fun - I remember his face when I asked for a Tio Pepe sherry ( I'd never had one but I thought it seemed sophisticated ) and his mirth when I took a sip and found it to be so foul tasting ! (I drank it though !) My Uncle John and Aunty Viv were great people and were a perfect match for each other. Happy times were spent together in England or Canada. When Ian and I became a couple we spent many an hour eating, drinking , debating and laughing with Viv, John, Fran and Duncan on our visits to Canada. My Mum's visit to Canada was one of the highlights of her life as we managed to get her there via the Queen Mary and then an adventurous road trip from New York where we met Ian for that leg of the journey . Ian had no luggage as it had been lost in transit and Mum admired Viv's pluckiness as she observed her opening the door to her house in the early hours of the morning to the biggest man she had ever set eyes upon with Ian's luggage - John was fast asleep and we were staying with Fran and Duncan ! There are so many many memories that we are lucky to have and our lives have been made richer by Uncle John and Anuty Viv being part of them. We are fortunate to have shared many of these memories with Fran and Duncan and that part of the journey goes forward. We will continue to remember the past whilst making new memories for the future. Christina and Ian

I remember John as a very kind person with a great sense of humour. He was also a fine artist and I have his pictures up on my wall. Viv and John were a very happy couple and went to Florida every year to get away from the cold and snow. I have lovely memories of my visit to Canada and also spending time with Fran and Duncan. These happy memories will stay with me for always. Iris Muchlinski ( Sister in law )

In 1976 we had the most fantastic holiday with John & Viv in their beautiful home in Don Mills. They were amazing hosts and took us everywhere - it was fabulous!
Pete was a keen squash player at the time and John suggested that he organised a game for him at the Donaldo Club which he duly did. I remember arriving at the squash courts and being introduced to a very fit man (in every sense of the word - this guy had the most amazing blue eyes!!!) and if memory serves, he was called Guido - but I have to confess I was more interested in the visual impact rather than the name!!!!!!
After the first game, which Pete lost 9-0 John very mischievously confessed "Well I knew Guido was up and coming, I just didn't realise he'd come up so far!".
It turned out that he was about to take part in a County (or whatever the Canadian equivalent is) Championship.
I remember John and I giggling uncontrollably then overly cheering on the rare occasion when Pete scored a point (and, of course, feeling very sorry for Pete!!! After all he was my husband and John's nephew!)
When we got back to the house we got a royal telling off from Viv for finding the massacre so entertaining - Pete slept most of that afternoon! He's fine now thanks!!
When someone close to you becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. We will always treasure our memories.
Enormous love from Pete, Viv and Adam

I'll remember my uncle John as someone who enjoyed all life has to offer. A passion for reading (the only person I know who has read the bible!) a tallented artist and a love for Newcastle Brown ale and fine wines! A long and full life to be celebrated. He'll be missed and fondly remembered.

I worked with John and Joe in the early 1970s. It was a wonderful office to work in - John was the consummate gentleman, a model of grace and charm who gave me - recently graduated - encouragement and opportunities to take on design responsibilities. Wine and cheese were served on Friday afternoons - wine which was much finer than that which I could afford at the time! I also remember John and his wife having us over to their home in Don Mills - gracious and fun loving hosts. My condolences to all. He was a very fine man!

Fran, I was so sad to hear about your dad. Your family and mine go back a long way and we did many things together. I always adored your father and his sense of humor along with his talent as an artist. He enjoy many weekends at the Men's Stag at our cottage and many paintings came from those trips. He will be missed. Love Althea

Frances, I was very sorry to hear of your father's passing. I have many fond memories of your family from my years growing up in Don Mills. I still remember your Dad spending many hours working on that wonderful (and quite sizeable) painting of a group of brightly coloured houses. Spending time in Muskoka years ago with John, Vivien, Michael and yourself was very enjoyable. John was a very relaxed and understanding father. It was always fun to visit your home. I'm glad John lived to a good age. With Sympathy, Peter MacMillan
