We were so deeply saddened and shocked to learn of Chris' passing. He was a dedicated and wonderful artist. He produced beautifully crafted illustrations for Charles' very first version of Jake is Late, over 20 years ago. We had them framed and displayed in our home several years ago because we liked his art work so much. We will gladly contribute to the Scholarship Fund in fond memory of Chris. We offer our very sincere condolences to the entire family.

Chris, you were a character, a gentleman and an inspiration! You always had something fun or interesting to share during our daily conversations. Whether it was a cool new restaurant you discovered, an event you were out to until 3am, or an art project you were working on, I always walked away from those chats saying "I want to be like him when I grow up!" NEVER down or discouraged, you lifted my spirits without even trying. I needed a room unlocked at school today...and thought of you. Thank you for showing us what it meant to live with passion and joy!

I am so going to miss Chris’s amazing laugh, his kind heart, his warm hugs, and his unwavering optimism. He was a great and committed artist and no matter what curve ball life threw at him he always managed to take it in stride and move ahead with a fresh and positive outlook. He was such a keen observer of life’s beautiful details. I'm sad.

To the Hayes family, My deepest condolences to you on the sudden loss of Chris. I had the pleasure of knowing him for many years, and am saddened that he passed so young. Everyone knows what a talented artist he was, and he was so kind to have created a piece for me to give to a friend who moved away from Toronto. I remember how eager he was to do it for me, and how hard he worked to get it just right. I am keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers. Patti Matthews (Rainville) Richmond, VA

I was devastated to hear of Chris's passing. He was always a great energy in the hallways of Westview. He would pop into our DD classroom daily to talk to the kids and spread his positive attitude. He always was genuinely interested in the students' lives, and he cared as much, if not more, than the most dedicated teachers I've worked with. I still hang the beautiful piece of his artwork that I bought for my fiancee. It is a prominent feature of our dining room. Such a beautiful person. This is a huge loss to the community and to the planet. My heartfelt condolences go out to Chris's family and friends during this horrendous time.

I felt very sad hearing about Chris's passing and absolutely stunned. However, my first thoughts were about his daughters and how I remembered his bond with them. He is/was the Dad everyone wanted. Their bond is fixed & will be there forever. A big hug and to his daughters. I enjoyed my conversations with Chris on the HPSC bus and backyard about sports; being positive & to be accepting of us all; to our differences. Mostly, to keep an open mind. I followed his art. Thank you Chris! Callie Dunne
