Jean or Mrs. Holden, as we called her when we where kids, gave Nancy and I sewing and knitting lessons. She taught me how to read sewing and knitting patterns, to thread a bobbin and use a sewing machine, how to make a quick knot on the end of a needle for hand sewing and not to get mad or impatient when I had to rip out part of my work because I made a mistake. I can still hear her saying, "you have to be a good ripper to be a good sewer". I am very thankful to have been taught those useful skills especially when as a new bride, I could make curtains for our house and later expertly patch up ripped jeans for my 2 little boys. I never turn on my sewing machine without thinking of you Jean.
