Aunt Alyce was a fixture in my life, particularly when I was very young - but always a fixture now that I am old. When I was a baby, I contracted pneumonia - a serious risk in an age where penicillin was only just becoming available. I spent quite a long time in Sick Childrens' Hospital in the company of uniformed nurses. When I was released, my Mom was a little put out when I would only want to be held by Aunt Al - dressed in white.
My favourite Aunt Al story was a story by her - not of her. It was awaking one morning to find a race horse tied to a tree outside her house. Her Dad had won it in a poker game. As Aunt Al said, once her Mother found out, the race horse disappeared!
