Obituary of Lylia Jones
JONES, Lylia (Miller)
Peacefully, on May 4, 2016 at Markhaven Home for Seniors, Markham, in her 95th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon (2000), son Warren (2007), daughter Edna (1956), grandsons Brady Bell (1985) and Kirk Bell (2011). Also predeceased by brothers Norman and Nelson Miller and sister Grace Gibson. Dearly loved mother of Elizabeth Thurston, Phyllis Gray (Dave), Loreen, Lauretta Bell, Marilyn Rydzik (Ken), Reg (Sandy), Glenn (Kelly). Grandmother to 17 grandchildren and GG to 14 great-grandchildren. Survived by brother Claire Miller (Winnie), sister-in-law Doris Miller, and brother-in-law Ross Gibson, and many nieces and nephews. Lylia was born on a farm near Elmvale, then came to the big city of Toronto in 1942, where she met Gordon. Their courtship was conducted through many humorous letters after he was stationed in Halifax during WWII. Lylia decided to accept Gordon's proposal when her employer advised her to "always marry someone who has a sense of humour because when you have nothing else, laughter will get you through the hard times". After the war ended they moved from Halifax to Fernleigh where they owned and operated a sawmill. They then farmed in Woodbridge, and eventually settled in Markham in 1956. Lylia was a long time member of the Markham Historical Society, the Markham Horticultural Society, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and a 35-year volunteer with Markham Fair. She won many prizes at the Fair for her flowers, pickles, preserves and baking. Thanks to the staff of Markhaven and Welcome Homecare for the compassionate care they provided to Lylia over the past three years. The most thanks go to Marion, Lylia's personal caregiver for her kind and gentle care. Lylia truly appreciated everyone who helped her. Friends will be received at Dixon Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main St. N.(Markham Road), Markham on Saturday, May 7 from 1:00 pm, with service at 3:00 pm, and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Markhaven Inc., 54 Parkway Ave., Markham L3P 2G4, the Markham Food Bank, 190 Bullock Dr., #11, Markham L3P 7N3, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online condolences can be posted, and donations made, at www.dixongarland.com.
