Growing up in Markham, Dr.Duff was the only dentist we knew. We remember Dr.Duff fondly as a kind, warm man who was always welcoming and respectful. Dr.Duff also had a great sense of humor. He was always patient, and a true family friend. Our deepest condolence. Dr.Duff will truly be missed.

I was sadden to read of Norman's death in the Globe & Mail. To me he was a very special man and dentist; one who was so gentle, kind and caring. Over the years I have always been very grateful to him for helping me face my fear of dentists. June, I am also more than grateful to you for encouraging me to pluck up the courage and make that first appointment with him. Blessings to you and your family on your great loss. Signed - Norm's most petrified patient!

I am sorry for the Duff family's loss of Norm.
Dr. Duff was my dentist since I was 7 to about age 30. He was also a neighbour, and I would sometimes see him out for a walk in the neighbourhood in the early evening. I'd always stop and say hello. He always gave the impression he was so happy to see me. Good natured and friendly. Back in the early '90s, teeth whitening became a fad. It remains a silly and vain fad to this day, in my opinion...and I think in Dr. Duff's, too.
I asked Dr. Duff what he thought of this teeth whitening business during one of my dental visits. "What do you make of that?" I asked him (I was a university student of philosophy and eager to get a real dentist's take on it.)
"Well," he said in that halting way he had — and I paraphrase — "it's a little crazy, I think, isn't it? Teeth are *not* naturally bright white, are they? No, they're not. They're off white. So, this is rather unnatural, isn't it?"
I always remembered that. I'll always remember, Dr. Duff, too.

Dr. Duff always managed to put me at ease while I sat in the chair. I always prayed I wouldn't get the chair that had Mr. Squeeky (his noisy drill). He taught me how to appreciate mosquito bites (as he called the needles) & always sent me away with a smile & a popper. He was a kind & caring person with a wonderful personality & disposition. Our thoughts & prayers are with your family during this difficult time. God Bless you all.

Dear June and Family It was a shock for me to see Dr. Duff's obit in the Globe and Mail and left me with a great sadness in my heart. He was my dentist for years and I especially enjoyed his sense of humour. It was always fun to go to his office and he didn't hurt me once and I was terrified of dentists. He always talked about you (the love of his life) and his children. I have great teeth because of Norm. I've seen you at fashion shows in the past and please accept my condolences. You two were a great team together and he always told me about how you would go downtown to Creeds (I think). I married a prof from U of T and now live in The Kingsway in the West End. I didn't even know there were streets past Yonge Street as I always lived in the east end and Markham for 30 years. Thinking of you. With sympathy Ruth Boehnke/Powell

I am very sorry for your loss. I will never forget Dr. Duff for his kindness as our family dentist. He helped me as a scared child by showing me his tools ànd what they did. He called them squeaky and windy. You couldn't have asked for a nicer man.

Dear Duffs, I am truly sorry and hope that you can focus on your many good memories. I have many memories of your dad at the chalet, the Snowy Owl, in Huntsville, the smell of his pipe and when he and I took tenor banjo lessons one year. I think he practiced way more than I did. He was always quick with a smile, I know that my parents considered him a good friend. Blessings Mardi

As sharp as a tack, and always quick with a joke, Uncle Norm was the funniest person I have ever known. He lit up the room with his joy and humour, always ensuring we got a dose of his best medicine.
Thank you for all the laughs, and my great smile.

One of my (many) favourite stories of Dad was of walking with him down the main street of Markham when I was a kid and at every store or shop we passed either the owner or a customer would call out "Hi, Doc!" or "Hi Norm, how are you doing?" I thought it was so neat that everybody knew and liked my Dad.

To June, Do, Cam, Fraser, Sally, Cameron, & Mckenna-- My deepest condolances over the passing of your loved one. Norm was always a gentleman, even when, one summer day many years ago, he & June came home to find several of Fraser's university friends occupying the Duff family room. We were all soaked after just having had a vigorous water fight in the back yard. Norm didn't bat an eye, merely offered us towels & a place to dry off. No recriminations -- I may have even seen him suppress a smile, like he remembered similar hijinks during his youth. A real class act who welcomed all to his home and made them feel welcomed. He raised sons who do him proud in all they do. In sympathy - Marla Hayes
