I originally got to know Hat at St. Andrew’s United Church in Markham. That was a long time ago. Although I shared his love of Jazz, Hal was certainly more passionate. It was an honor for me to have him ask me to do his website “Jazz Canadiana” so many years ago. More than that, it was an honor to know the man. He will be missed.

So sad to get this news. Hal was one of my favourite interviews when I was assistant editor at the Markham Economist & Sun. I put him on the cover of our old Tuesday edition.

If I was asked to describe what I think of Hal, the first thing that comes to my mind is he was always always very helpful. Hal, you and your beloved wife, Chris, are re-united again, no more pain and in better hands now. You will be missed! Brenda

That is a beautiful tribute to your granddad Suzy. I am sure he was very proud of his grandchildren. I know this is a difficult time. May our friendship, sympathy and heartfelt condolences bring you some comfort.

When I think of my Grandad, I think of three words. Loving Caring and oh yes, Jazz. Even though Jazz should really be at the top of the list, he always put his love for his grandchildren, children and his animals before anything or anyone else. For many of you that do not know my grandad well, he was what I would call the "Jazz man". He knew all the famous jazz musicians and shared many personal memories and experiences with them. If you don't believe me, just take a look at his residence wall. It was covered with famous musicians. Grandad was a cool cat back in his days! I have so many memories of my grandad that I know I will cherish forever. To learning to swim in their beautiful pool, to living with them for 5 months during a move. And oh yes, for Elaine and Mike.. The Garfield colouring books. Granddad always wanted to please, and would do anything to help you out. Up at our family cottage, my granddad would offer to walk the dogs and help with the cooking. He always had a good story to share and was an excellent listener. Grandad loved my Nana very much and I know with her passing it was like it took a part of him too. It gives me peace knowing that he is now able to be with her again, along with all the animals and people that were lucky enough to share a piece of their lives with my grandads. Love you always Grandad, Love your granddaughter, Suzanne - AKA. Nerdle Werdle.
