Obituary of Darlene Blake
Darlene was born on May 13, 1938 in Cedar Grove, ON and shared the family home with her parents Lorne and Della Dimma and her sister Donna. She attended Cedar Grove Public School, Markham High School, and Toronto Teachers’ College. Later she completed her B.A. degree at York University. Her outstanding teaching career started at G.B. Little Public School, with the Scarborough Board of Education. A group of teachers from that school and Darlene have been part of a friendship group for 60 years, often meeting once a month. Like many of them she continued to tutor students until age 86. The Dimma family attended Locust Hill United Church for many years but eventually came to Markham Missionary in 1998 and readily took part in the ministry. Lorne served faithfully in the sound booth, and Darlene became active in Sunday School classes, summer Bible camps, Administrative Board member, Bible Study groups, and in later years as a Nursery School Board director. In 2002 she joined our church choir, and became very active in our annual Christmas Musical Drama. Home life for Darlene included every Blue Jay game, and support for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. Knitting hats for homeless people was part of watching these games. Travelling was another love of Darlene’s and she visited almost every country of the world. On a trip to the British Isles, she located her parental ancestor’s graves, dating back to the early 1800’s in Scotland. As she watched Amazing Race she could recognize many places of her travels. More than 40 years ago she moved to Madison Ave. in Markham establishing a great relationship with her neighbours. A big thank you is owed to these people and other dear friends whose names follow here. Jeka Akylas (44 years), Marilyn Gordon (taught together), Paul Strachan & Roberta (30 years), Sally (hairdresser) and a faithful care giver Shanthi. Much care was also given by Jim and Doris Johnston and Mats and Sonia Petersson. These people filled her need for support along with the staff at Amica. Of special mention is her grandnephew Kyle whom she supported, mentored and felt so proud of him. Darlene was promoted to glory on November 21, 2024 where she is now with her parents and in the presence of her Lord. Her memory will be cherished by her family and friends, and she will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched, as they crossed her path.
