Vera Helene Klara Schroeter Obituary

Vera Helene Klara (nee Becker) Schroeter, died peacefully at Woodhaven Long Term Care in Markham on Friday, February 23, 2024 in her 94th year.

Vera was predeceased by her husband Gerhard, her younger brothers Joachim, Hermann, Walter, Bruno, Horst and her sisters Krystal and Erika. She was predeceased by grandchildren: Sondra, Daniel, Nicole and Viki. She is sadly missed by her children: Alma Watts (Dennis), Gerlind Milich (Dane), Trudy Burkholder (Dave), Harold Schroeter (Kim) and Jane van Haaren (Pieter).

She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Heather (Pete), Jessica (Ron), Erik, Melodie (Nick), Nina, Patrick (Alicia), Rachel (Simon), Ivana (Chris), Nadia (Jason), Courtney, Brendan (Katie), and Vanessa as well as twenty great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Jacob, Jamie, River, Nathan, Elden, Isaac, MacKenzie, Emmett, Theo, Harvey, Adelyn, Bryson, Naomi, Ian, Ella, Elias, Riley, Sloane and Waverly. Vera, Mutti, was born May 16, 1930 in Driesen, Kreis Friedeberg, Neumark (now Poland). She was the daughter of Paul and Klara (Otto) Becker.

She met Gerhard Schroeter, Vati, in 1947 and they were married Sept. 22, 1950 in Schleswig. In the summer of 1953, Mutti & Vati immigrated to Canada with three daughters: Alma, Gerlind & Trudy. They came to Markham sponsored by Gerhard’s Uncle Richard Schroeter of north Markham. Over the next several years Harold and Jane joined the family. In 1955 Gerhard built their own house on Rouge Street. 40 Rouge Street remained the base they called home where they raised their family, and lived their busy lives. In 2010 they sold this property and moved to Parkview Village Apartments in Stouffville. In 2017 Gerhard died and Vera continued to live in their apartment until March of 2020 when she moved to Long Term Care - at the beginning of Covid.

The family is grateful for the high level of care she received during her four years at Woodhaven, AgeCare, Markham. We thank God for the gift of our mother Vera. We will miss you, Mutti.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Vera’s memory to Scouts Canada, Parkview Services for Seniors or Mennonite Central Committee.
