Obituary of Evelyn Sarah Merker

Merker, Evelyn Sarah (nee Garvie)

Passed away peacefully on December 16, 2023, in Markham in the embrace of her dearest husband Walter at the age of 76.  
 

Born on May 2nd, 1947 in Scotland, Evelyn (Evy) was a pillar of courage and humility. She was the beloved wife of Walter, their union a testament to enduring love, unwavering support, and shared joys for over five decades. Evy was the heart of her family, survived by her children Elizabeth, Michael, Matthew, and Marie. Her dedication and love extended beyond her immediate family, encompassing her grandchildren Jennifer, Erich, Catherine, and Wren, who brought immeasurable joy to her life.
 

In 2014, Evy confronted the formidable challenge of stage 4 cancer with an indomitable spirit that inspired all who knew her. She faced her diagnosis with remarkable bravery, resilience, and determination to cherish every moment with her family. Evy’s unyielding spirit shone brightly through the darkest of times, earning her the endearing titles of "Stoic" and "Iron Lady."

Throughout her battle, Evy found support from the medical community, and the family would like to thank Drs. Mateya Trinkaus, Zishan Alibhai and Gregory Soon, whose expertise and compassion provided invaluable guidance. The nurses at the Markham Stouffville Hospital Cancer Clinic and Medical Day Unit helped her through some of her darkest days, treating her with respect and care during her treatments. The family would also like to thank the nurses and support workers beyond the hospital who allowed Evy to maintain dignity, especially Mehdi, Rajinder and Josie, who provided timely support, becoming beacons of hope and comfort in her journey. 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
