Obituary of Martine Vierhuis

VIERHUIS, Martine (82) – Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023 with her family by her side at the Markham Stouffville Hospital.  She is deeply missed by her beloved husband Johannes (Hans) Heinrich Robert Vierhuis and her children Anita (Clement), Tanya, Erica, and Hans Jr. (Karin).  Martine was also the proud grandmother to Arissa, Nicholas, Rosemary, Nevena, Michael, Jack, Antea, Johannes-Alex, and Emma. 

Born in Malang, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) her family was forced to move to The Netherlands in 1949 at the official establishment of the Indonesian state. She met Hans, her husband of 58 years, in high school in The Hague (Netherlands). Together they decided to immigrate to Canada in 1964, where they have resided in Markham, Ontario ever since.

During her life she was a mother and a real estate agent selling new homes in Markham, later working in the Markville Mall in a restaurant until she retired in 2001.  Martine will be held dear in the hearts of her family, relatives, and many friends. 

A memorial visitation will take place on Monday, June 19th, 2023 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Dixon-Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main Street North, (905) 294-2030.  At Martine’s request, there will be no funeral service.  If desired, donations in Martine’s memory may be made to Foodbank Markham and would be appreciated by Johannes (Hans), Anita (Cheong), Tanya, Erica, and Hans Jr. Vierhuis.
