Hi to Jeff, Laura, and family. First, my condolences on your loss. You may remember me as being your piano teacher in Switzerland who had, in Canada, lived not far from you! I came across the obituary in the Star, and, knowing the last name was not common, read on. I wondered if you were the Canadian family I had taught, and my suspicions were cemented when I saw the names of Harold's grandchildren - I remembered them!
I feel for you at this difficult time, and hope that otherwise you are doing well.

My condolences to the family and friends. I taught at Thornhill in the mid 1980s. Harold was an exemplary principal. He had a habit of catching people doing good things and I was one of those. He caught me making a call to a parent to say how well their child was doing in one of my classes. Harold overheard me and soon after, there was a note in my mail slot complimenting what I did. He was always encouraging and I am sure his recommendation played a part in my successful application for a department head position at another school.

My deepest sympathies to each of you Jacquie, Jeff, Jo and Jen. It is so difficult to lose a parent. Your dad was a true gentleman with a kind heart, patience and a great sense of humour. He was always welcoming. I remember, with fondness, the large gatherings your folks would host at their home where we enjoyed each others company, skated and warmed ourselves by indoor and outdoor fires. Thinking of all of you during this difficult time and sending my love and support,
Jody Greenlaw

I attended Markham District High School while Mr. Zavitz was vice-principal. He had the reputation as the "stern one" which, I'm sure, was not by nature, but by role. He was a wonderful man, and very supportive and inspirational. His family was blessed, as we all were, for having been with him.

My memories of Harold are lovely. He gave me my first permanent job at Thornhill SS and it changed my life for the better. He was a true gentleman and so very kind. How lucky you girls were to have a father like him. May all your perfect memories help you now.

I have nothing but warm, love-filled memories of Harold (and the entire Zavitz clan). How patient he was trying to explain basic science to an inquisitive six year old with some crazy questions. I will always remember his quick and easy smile and how gentle and caring he was.

We are so very sorry to hear of Harold's passing. He was a strong leader of Markham staff, always supportive and easy to talk to. His even temper and great sense of humor helped make Markham DHS one of York Region's best schools for both students and teachers.

Jennifer, Jeff, Joanne, Jackie and all the members of your family: there simply aren’t enough spoken or written words that can express the sorrow and sadness of the loss of your father. He was so well liked and respected as a teacher, an administrator and member of the community. He was everyone’s friend. If you lived in Markham and didn’t know him, you hadn’t lived there long enough. He was a mentor to me as a teacher but more so as a father. I will miss our chats and breakfasts but I will always cherish the memories, the advise and the laughs. He will be so missed.
