Janet and myself went to Toronto in 1993. We went at the request of John to help with design of a proposed extension to Toronto's subway system .Unfortunately the project was cancelled and we returned to Vancouver in 1995. During this period John and Gill made us feel welcome and at home. John was a considerate and hard working engineer who made time at the office rewarding and enjoyable .He will be sadly missed by all. Deepest regrets to Gill and the Family - our thoughts are with you.
John Eastman

Dear Gill, I was so sorry to hear about John. You were both so kind to us & made us so welcome during our three years in Toronto. My memory of John is nothing connected to ND Lea although I guess you could say it was a bit of artsy crafty engineering. I was so impressed the wooden standing Christmas decorations he made since Christmas is my time for creating . He inspired me. My condolences to you & the family at this sad time. Janet Eastman.

Our condolences go out to Gillian and family. Although it was 50 years ago I still remember John as the best boss (mentor) I ever had while working for Damas & Smith. When I left DS I worked for Norman Lea and after I left there I was pleased to hear the two companies joined together, a great combination. We wish everyone well and stay safe through these trying times ... Case & Kathy Vanderplas

John was indeed the Patriach of the "Canadian Family" and he loved to give orders.
As an example he would organize the Chrismas Skits and wave his 'baton' at all of us (some drunk) to sing as a chorus.
In Saudi, he planned, gave orders again, and built the swimming pool on our compound.
He also helped build Cathie and Doug's Auld Reekie camp. NOTHING was too big or too small for John to handle.
Gone but not forgotten!

Such a special person. Everything John tackled, he gave it his all and yet made it look so very easy. Our friendship spanned over many years. Although our loss is painful, memories of John will always make us laugh. Christmas with the Longs and the rest of the Canadian Family were always hilarious. The skits with of course John as director will remembered by all. His standards were high. What a privilege it was to be his friend and to be part of our Canadian Family. Heaven is in for some good times. God speed our dear friend. We loved you for just being you.

A man of few words, I always paid very close attention when he spoke. I will remember the great times we shared at the Crichton cottage as well as the Ottawa Hockey Weekend. A great man, I know he will be immensely missed. Sending much love to his entire family.
