I had the pleasure of knowing Gib for only 5 years. His impact when he visited the farm warmed my heart every time. My favorite memory is he never forgot to give me a beautiful bouquet of fresh asparagus every spring. We would ride in his golf cart at the slowest of speed and we would joke at what Evelyn would think of him giving another girl a bouquet!

Gib was my fathers cousin. Their mothers were sisters from Carlisle UK. Gib was my childhood hero. His photo in RCAF uniform stood on our bookcase all my childhood. With admiration and glee my father recalled the night Gib set down a plane at Anthorn near Carlisle in thick fog. " A piece of cake" said Gib. One of the famous few who helped Britain. Later in Canada I got to know the kindhearted man with the great sense of humour and wondrous smile. We send heartfelt condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Gib was very special to me as he was to so many. I was privileged to have him in my life for so many years. The bouquets of flowers from his garden he brought so many times to brighten my office at the farm shop, the annual vegetable marrow I would l look forward to each season. His infectious laugh and glorious smile will forever remain in my heart. A dedicated father, grandfather and friend. Heaven got a bumper crop this year as the sweetest arrives home to his songbird. My very deepest condolences to the whole Whittamore family. My heart goes out to you all.
With Much Love,
Lill

Sending deepest sympathy to the whole family ---Gib will be missed. I had the privilege to welcome Gib and Evelyn into my classroom at MDHS as they shared their life story with my Grade 12 class. When I think of Gib, the first thought that comes to mind is his smile and welcoming personality. When you spoke with Gib he would give you his genuine undivided attention. I remember seeing Gib one day come down to the market wearing his unique sun hat, to collect some brewed coffee grinds to put around the base of his roses, That's the secret he told me proudly !
It was a genuine privilege to know Gib. I have no doubt that he is with his beloved Evelyn and is without a doubt the new Head Gardener up in Heaven.
My sincere condolences to all the Whittamore family, may your memories of Gib fill your heart with joy.
Love you all
Jackie

As friends of Bruce and Kathy Sim, we were privileged to meet Gib (and many others in the Whittamore and Sim families) in the 1980's. We have fond memories of Gib and Evelyn welcoming us into their home, asking about our lives with genuine interest and serving fresh raspberries for breakfast - the best we've ever tasted.
Gib was an exemplar of "the greatest generation", a humble patriot, hard-working citizen and a student of the world. Long may his memory stay with us, a life in full bloom and a mind engaged in each day. Noel & Beth Burt

Laura and I will always have a smile when thinking of Gib. He helped Laura so much in the early years of Direct Farm marketing attending the Ohio Conferences. Always positive and sharing with his wonderful smile and twinkle in his eyes!
The graduating class of OAC '49 had so many outstanding individuals that had been hardened by the war years, lived life fully and made such an amazing contribution to Canada. Often referred to as the Dream Year of the Ontario Agricultural College.
Gib was a pioneer of the pick your own strawberry industry in Ontario starting what became one of the best for 2 generations.
Love to the family who we respect so much.

Mr. and Mrs. Whittamore were part of my parents’ close circle of friends during my formative years. Their life-example and stedfast support during those years, as members of that caring and consistent community was nothing short of the core of my foundation as I found my way as a young adult. When I reflect on what has come to be referred as...it takes a village.. I know that these Cedar Grove families provided just that for us who were fortunate enough to have had their caring arms around us.
I loved to hear Gib’s ”Recitations” involving the adventures (or catastrophes) of Wee Albert, or the misadventures of certain IN-surance SALES-man.
He gave me my job, plucking strawberry blossoms off of young plants (Man! That was back breaking!) and later employment guiding members of the public to pick fruit from designated rows of berries.
But most of all, when I would return to Cedar Grove I could count on Gib’s smile, his warmth, and interest in what new adventures I had found along my journey.
I am grateful for having known him.

Many wonderful memories flooded my brain this morning. Gib walking his fields, teaching me how to snip strawberry blossoms, how to choose and cut asparagus, how to plant tomatoes on the planting machine. So, so many memories. Helping me with my science homework, driving me home after babysitting, he will be missed, but he will be remember always.
