Agostino Virgilio, Gus was his nickname. He was my grandfather, Nonno was what we called him. He made it to 94 years old, he would have been 95 in June, only one month later. But, it was his time. He suffered for the past few years, always had pains of some kind. But, now I’m at ease he is at peace. I will miss him greatly. My Nonno was a very kind hearted man, although strict when he a bit was younger. He was also full of stories to tell. Every Sunday we used to gather for lunch, a Sunday barbecue. He would always have something new to tell us. Nonno was always humorous, making any situation funny with a joke. He also had a green thumb, every spring around this time in May he would begin tending to the garden. He grew many vegetables and flowers. I mostly remember the juicy tomatoes and the pink roses. How beautiful it was. Nonno had quite a history, before coming to Canada in the 50’s he worked in France for a while. And before this he was in the Italian Military during WW2. I’ve learned so much from Nonno’s stories and his experiences. He was so excited when I told him I was going to become a teacher, he motivated me and wouldn’t rest until he heard I was finally hired onto the school board. I’m grateful to have so many amazing memories. Nonno was a very hard working man, an honest man, a loving grandfather, father and husband to my grandmother. We will all miss him greatly. Rest in peace Nonno.
