My sister Bonnie Weatherill passed away this week. Another great loss for so many but it was her time and she was ready.
Our younger sister Wenda has already mentioned Bonnie’s famous “Nooo!”. It could be recognized anywhere in any crowd – so unique. Just to be clear, it was an expression of surprise and sometimes pleasure and not the typical expression of anger or denial. Wenda and I do appear to have adopted it but probably not yet perfected it.
Rhona and I are so thankful to Bonnie and Lester for allowing us to spend our Honeymoon at the “Bonnieview” cottage in 1994. What a beautiful place they made it and there were few black flies except for the one that got caught in my wind pipe – I think it is still there.
Despite living at a distance for 50 years I have many memories of Bonnie and will keep them as long as possible. I will even think of Bonnie the next time I have a cone at the Dairy Depot in Salisbury. One memory I would like to share is from the days when brother Gary and I spent summers and other periods living and working on the farm (Elmrill Farms). We worked hard and the meals were one of the great rewards. I recall Bonnie spending many hours in the kitchen every fall making preserves of peaches, pears and more. They were delicious. How many people remember all the pickles – 7 day pickles, 9 day pickles, sweet pickles and who knows how many more. Anybody who has experienced only the commercial pickle products of today have no idea what they are missing. However, the pickles and the fruit were surpassed by one item never to be forgotten. Bonnie’s CHILLI SAUCE. I have had many kinds of chilli sauce since but none like that. I couldn’t get enough. One of the few times I ever remember getting in trouble with Bonnie is when I emptied half a bottle of that chilli sauce my potatoes. (I probably had the other half when she was not looking.) I could never expect an equal – older sister or sauce.
RIP Bonnie
