Mark and I were shocked and very saddened when hearing about Chris. I don't remember when he wasn't part of our family. I laughed when I read Wendy's story about Chris always winning at the pool tournaments at Aunt Lou's as I too only won once and that is when Chris was my partner. In fact I still have the picture in my photo album. One of the memories I have of Chris was at Grandma's funeral. My parents were sitting in a room off to the side during the service. I would have been 11 at the time. Debbie and Chris were sitting in the row in front of Clint and I and Chris reached back and put his hand on top of mine during the service. Chris will always be remembered for the truly genuine nice guy that he was.

We were in shock to hear about Cousin Chris. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Debbie and Michelle in this sad time. I think back to the times as a child when I was told that my cousins and Aunt and Uncle were coming for a visit. It was always a special time in my young life to see them even though they were older than me. I remember how Chris was such a happy guy that always treated me so well even though I am sure that I was probably an annoying little kid. I had lost touch over a large number of years but when I moved back to Ontario, Chris welcomed me openly as I dropped in to visit him at his work when I was in the area. This was so typical of the warm and generous demeanor of this gentle giant of a cousin.

Deb and Michelle I was shocked and saddened to learn or Rube's sudden passing. I first met Chris years ago when he joined the MMRHL on Sunday nights. As a team captain I was thrilled to have what we call a ringer on my team. Not only was he a very talented hockey player but he had a great sense of humour that helped to lift the teams spirits game in and game out. He will be missed by all those league players who had the fortune to play with him. My thoughts and prayers are with you both at this time. God Bless.

I have so many memories that include Chris, he has been a part of our family for so long (I actually don't remember him not being part of the family) and in so many ways. From the infamous Pilkey pool tournaments that happened at Aunt Lou's over the holidays (which he always won and helped my sister win too!) to his white hat inscribed with Babe that used to hang in the kitchen at the cottage. Chis was always ready with a smile and a laugh but you also knew that anytime you needed anything he would be there. Chis - the world and all who knew you are less for your passing but more for having the opportunity of knowing you.

I have two memories
One summer when I was down visiting I started a water fight with uncle Chris at the beach. The war was on when I started the water fight. We were finished at that time when we had to go back to the cottage, but the next day when all of us were getting ready to go down again, Uncle Chris was on the roof waiting for me to come out. Well when I came out I got a huge bucket of water dumped on me. I will never for get this memory
The other one I have is the very first summer that I was down to see the family Uncle Chris bought me these moon boots that were in fashion at that time and Michelle had the same pair. I will never forget these memories

To the Family: It was with immense sadness that many of us in the Ottawa area learned of the sudden passing of Chris. As a former Director of the Canadian Emergency Preparedness College, I cannot say enough about the integrity and attributes of "Rube". His name was first brought to my attention as a promising future visiting staff member at the College. We quickly decided to bring him on board, and he proved to be an invaluable member of the team. Course participants were always positive in their feedback about Chris. He was such a very gentle and kind man - always helpful, always upbeat - he was so well liked by everyone. Chris was always vibrant and fun, and his passing is hard to comprehend. When breaking this sad news to one of Chris's former visiting staff colleagues who is serving at a field medical camp 100 km outside of Syria, the reaction was one of shock. Chris touched everyone he met across this country. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family. Please know that at this very difficult time, the thoughts and prayers of many are with you. Ruth Carriere (Ottawa)

I played hockey with Chris in 4 of the last 10 years in the Markham Men's hockey league. He was a good hockey player and fun to be around. As a forward, I would always check to see if "Roubs" was there. A solid guy in everyway. He knew how to move the puck. He was one of the best "D" in the league. I now see that he was a Waxer back in the '70s. Chris was a fun guy to be around and will be missed by us all in the Markham Men's league.

I first met Chris in 2002 at the Canadian Emergency Management College, in Arnprior, Ontario. He was a (volunteer) fire service coach for the simulations on the Federal Emergency Management training programs. He loved to wear his "engineer's" hat during one of our simulations called "Hotwind". He played the role of CN rail during the train disaster. Often times the students would kick him out of the emergency "site" and he'd leave chuckling away. He was truly a smart, kind and generous person who loved life and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Deb, Michelle and Anthony. Sincerely, Mary Clare Massicotte

My deepest sympathies to Deb & Michelle during this difficult time. Rube was a man with a larger-than-life personality which forced you to like him immediately. He was responsible for giving me my nickname "Spike" when I was 6 and, 41 years later, that label has stuck around. I remember when Rube played hockey for the Waxers while I ran around the arena like a little rink rat and years later, fate would intervene and Rube & I would end up working together at Markham Fire. He was a fair, honest and trustworthy leader and more importantly, he was a good man, through and through. His presence around the department will be missed and his friendship will never be forgotten.

Rube...you gentle giant, you probably touched the lives of more people in your short time here than most people could in 200 years. I think that statement would probably embarrass you because you were too modest. I got to know you best when you and Deb followed your dream and purchased the farm.We did not see each other often but the phone conversations we had meant the world to me.Your honesty, mentoring and words of wisdom meant everything. You were a loving husband and father. The world will be a lesser place without you.I love you brother.

I was first introduced to Chris by Joe Romita, the owner of Markham Industrial. Chris and Joe used to play men's league hockey against each other.....Visualize this if you can: Chris was probably pushing 7' on skates, and Joe was at least a foot and a half shorter than that! One morning, Joe was limping around the shop here after a game the night before, and he told me a story about being run into the boards by this huge player on the other team...Guess who? It was Chris. They shared many laughs over that one! Our friendship grew over the years, he was always welcomed in the store as a customer, but most importantly, as a friend. We were always giving him advice on making his dream home a reality, and I for one, always enjoyed listening to the challenges he faced while making his dream come true. Our sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. Our world will never be the same.

Chris was my first and very best Captain. A man of honesty, integrity and strength. Supportive and a fire Captain who took care of the men under his command. It was my privilege to have had Rube as my captain as a young and brand new fire recruit. On night shift we shared many late night conversations about life, family and the job. We were both night owls and were always the last to retire. Years later when I became a designate Captain, Chris was there during Captains School as the senior Platoon Chief. It was a delight to work under Rube once again, provoking the old comfortable memories in a brand new environment. Chris shared many stories of his own family with me. Stories I will always remember. I remember well Rube's then 13 year old daughter Michelle visiting station 97 on bring your child to work day. And we still have the knitted baby outfit that Debbie made for us upon the birth of our first child Zara back in 1998. Rube- you will be greatly missed in so many ways. Lord Bless the Rouble family during this very difficult season of grief.
