I think I have always known about John but it wasn't until 2003 that I really got to know him. He invited me to go to St. Stephen with him (that is where my father, Gene McCabe, was born) and I am ever so grateful that I accepted his kind offer. John was funny, kind, interesting and had so many good stories about our family in NB. He was a very sweet man and I miss him still. He was always calm, cool and collected but so very logical and so organized. He was special.

Dear Donna and Brian, Over the past several years I had the wonderful opportunity to spend time with John after he re-connected with my Grandmother, Joyce. I always looked forward to when I would visit Nanny and John, he was such a sweet man who always seemed to put the happiness of others before his own. We spent time together at our cottage, and John even attended the ceremony when I began school at the Atlantic Veterinary College. I am sorry we won't have more summers to visit together, but I'm so happy for the ones we had. Thank you, John, for being a wonderful friend to Nanny and her family. You will be sorely missed. My condolences to you and all your family, Emma Vaasjo

Dear John- It is with very deep sorrow that i find i cannot be with you at this very sad time, but i feel you know that i am there,if in spirit only. I have so mant things to thank you for,so hope you won't mind if i reminisce a bit. our friendship began in 1947 when you attended my 16th birthday party and gave me a record. 60 years latter we renewed that friendship and found we had many things in common. Thank you for turning me into an amateur horologist when i didn't even know what a lugnut was and for restoring a beautiful clock for me because, and i quote" it was created the same year you were".Thank you for teaching me so much more about trees. Even finding the right alder branch to make me a whistle and for the wonderful story of the aspen tree. Thank you for all our many drives through the back woods of Charlotte county, many of which i didn't know existed. Also, for finding me so many beautiful waterfalls and covered bridges.Thank you for loving the Tree House,my old cottage. It will never be the same without you!! Thank you for the many hours we spent just reading, doing crossword puzzles,or you playing the guitar. Our duets were a riot!! Thank you for being so nice to my children and grandchildren and my brother Jim. These things and many many others have made for wonderful memories.Thank you most of all for just being you. Forever love Joyce.

Dear Donna,Peter and Brian, Although I only had an opportunity to know your father for a short time he quickly captured a special place in my heart. He was wise and kind and he made my mother Joyce very happy. He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved playing little pranks on me which made him remind me so much of my own father John who passed away when I was 25. John was so loved by everyone at Lake Utopia and we will miss him so much. You are in my thoughts and prayers-Stephanie

John became affectionately known in our family as "John A.T.S."- John across the street. He was, however, more than a good neighbour. He was a good friend. We spent many relaxing evenings on the porch, listening to his heartwarming stories. We will miss his witty sense of humour and kind heart. We are so lucky to have known him and will miss him terribly.

I feel very blessed to have seen John over the past few summers at my parents homestead in St. George. John was such a gentleman with his quite manner but boy could he play the ol' mandelin which hung on the wall. Dad would play the guitar and John would accompany my father and they would have a little jam session in the back porch or under the silver maple tree. Such treasured memories I will carry in my heart!
John your friendship will be sadly missed!

Just heard of John's passing with great sadness... John was an incredible man and although we have only known John for 4 years, we enjoyed having him as our neighbor and friend - the kids were always happy to see John come over while playing outside. We will certainly miss John and we are so very sorry for the loss of your father.
