Deacon Vern was an incrediable man. He was generous, kind, accepting and an example of what Jesus expects from us.
During our time at St. Patrick, Deacon Vern offered advice, guidance and kindness. During a challenging time for my husband and I, he even offered him sanctuary from immigration problems so that our new family could stay together. When my husband was scheduled for deportation, Deacon Vern than offered a private baptised for our new daughter so that her father, my husband could be present. He was truly a blessing in our lives. I will never forget him.
I was deeply saddened when I found out about his passing. Since we have moved away, we had lost contact from St. Patricks and are upset to have discovered we missed the opportunity to share our heart felt sorrow over the loose of such a special person.
Thank you Deacon Verm, we truly love and miss you. And thank you to his family that helped make him the man he was. God Bless !

Dearest Mary Lou, while we firmly believe that Vern is now with Our Lord Jesus, we are saddened by his passing. We will always remember his kind manner, common sense homilies, officiating at the Baptism of our grandchildren ... and in the so many ways that he contributed to our growth as a faith community. May God continue to bless you and your entire family.

When you have someone in your life for such a long time, it is a rude shock when they are no longer with you. My late wife, Peggy, and I have known Vern and Marylou since we moved to Markham in 1974. Vern was my role model as a Grand Knight and my spiritual leader through his warm, down-to-earth homilies as a deacon at St. Patrick church. My wife, Marcelle and I send our deepest condolences to the family on their loss and on Markham's loss.

I wish to offer my sympathy to MaryLou and the family.
I was only at St. Patrick's, as Associate Pastor, for a year (1990-91) before being assigned as Vocation Director, but I truly loved serving with Deacon Vern and to meet his lovely wife.
Vern attended daily mass and served the marginalized. He had a great laugh and was a great preacher. He was truly a man of God and yet he never seemed to rise above anyone else in his ministry. He remained humble and simply taught by example. I will miss all this, not to mention his wonderful humour and smile. I also wish to thank him and his lovely wife for their great witness of married love. They were truly one. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Dear Mary Lou and Family;
Marie and I are so choked up with your loss. I have always said both Mary Lou and Vern are and always will be the First Family of St. Patrick's who served all of us in such a wonderful and humble manner. We can learn so much from them with their service to our parish and too God. I have heard Vern say many times "my bags are packed" and what a beautiful message we also should all live by. Our prayers and thoughts are with you Mary Lou and your beautiful family.
Love and God Bless,
Tim and Marie Flynn

Cath & I were saddened to hear of Uncle Vernies passing. What a wonderful and full life he had. I will always remember the excitement we had when Uncle Vernie, Aunt Mary Lou and family were coming to Chatham. Nothing but good times followed. I will have a Scotch and toast Uncle Vernie and I'm sure he and Dad will be together joining me. We will miss him, as will all that had the pleasure to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Mary Lou and the whole family.
