Obituary of Ray Allen Northrup

Ray Allen Northrup was born May 22, 1936 and passed away suddenly on December 12, 2023. He was the most beloved husband of Jean for almost 66 years, dearly loved father of Wendy (Hollis) Justason and Darlene (Dana) Brant, adored Grampy/Gramps/Papa of Larry, Brandy, Brenda, Beth, Jennifer, Jason, Richard, Megan, Christopher and Derek and treasured GG to Victoria, Jonathan, Emily, Brooke, Pheobe, Dylan, Eloise and Charlie. Much loved uncle of many nieces and nephews and adopted father/grandfather to all his children’s and grandchildren’s friends. Son of Allen and MaeBelle Northrup, brother of Irene, James, George, Ethel, Susie and Alice. Predeceased by his son Bruce Northrup, his daughter Wanda Milligan, his parents and siblings Irene, James and George.

Ray started his military career as a Gunner in the Artillery and ended his career in RCEME as a heavy equipment mechanic. There wasn’t anything mechanical he couldn’t repair and he continued his career as a heavy equipment mechanic on “civvy street” until 1989 when he became a building superintendent until his retirement in 2001.

Ray always offered a helping hand and would do anything for anyone. His hugs were legendary and made you feel warm, comforted and loved…and they were freely and generously given. He loved camping in the Rockies with his family in Alberta, hunting, four wheeling and fishing the fields and streams of New Brunswick and many the adventures were had in “Chuck Wagon” with his grandchildren and those times will all be fondly remembered. Ray loved a strong cup of tea, with a cookie to dunk, and would invite anyone who visited to come in and sit for a spell and have a cup of tea with him. He made friends everywhere he went as he had a magical quality that attracted people to him and want to share a story. He was loved by all who knew him, he always had a story to share and he had that unique ability to become a friend in a matter of moments.  Ray was fiercely loved by all his family and friends - his kind and caring presence will be sorely missed and his absence from our family and lives leaves a gap that will never heal!

Our Country & Our Society is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

In remembrance of Sgt. Ray Allen NORTHRUP, CD (Ret.), Camp Utopia Veteran, "Class of 58", and one hell of a gentleman, who passed away unexpectedly yesterday.

Sgt. Northrup joined the 4th Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in 1955.  Trained at Camp Utopia, then saw service in Germany and Petawawa.  Transferred to the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers serving in Kingston & Petawawa.  In 1966 he went to Egypt with the United Nations.  Upon his return he continued to serve his Country in Calgary, AB, retiring in 1969.

Thank-you for all the memories Ray!!
