Alexander James Graham died peacefully on August 26, 2026, at Markham Stouffville Hospital after an extended illness. In his final days, he was surrounded by the love of his family. He was 84.

Those who knew Al knew him as quiet, generous and reliable. A man you could count on. A man who took care of things.

He took care of his family, first and foremost. He was a loving and devoted husband to Joy, whom he married in 1962 and cared for through her own years of declining health until her death in May 2013. Together, Al and Joy raised four children — Chris, Lauri, Nicole and Andrea — in the Markham home that remained the centre of their family life even as the kids grew up and started families of their own.

He was a loving and compassionate father and, eventually, a beloved Papa to seven grandchildren. He steadfastly supported the people he loved, helping when help was needed and offering wisdom when it was sought.

There was a quiet confidence to Al. He did not feel the need to talk for the sake of talking and was comfortable with silence, saving his words for when he had something worth saying. In a noisy world, Al understood the value of listening.

Al had a knack for seeing what needed to be done and simply doing it, without expecting recognition for having done it. Nowhere was that more evident than in the home he and Joy created for their family. It was a place of warmth and safety for their children and, later, their grandchildren.

Al's meticulous care of the family home extended to the backyard pool, which was surely one of the cleanest and best-maintained in the neighbourhood. It became a gathering place for pool parties when the kids were young and family get-togethers when the grandchildren came along. That Al maintained the pool for everyone’s benefit except his own became particularly clear when the family eventually stopped using it. He wasted little time filling it in.

Endlessly curious about how things worked and how they were built, Al possessed a keen, detail-oriented and technical mind. He was the rare person who actually read instruction manuals — in full — and enjoyed television programs devoted to explaining how things were made.

Those qualities served him well over a long career that included technical work with the TTC and engineering firms, and he brought the same patient, problem-solving talents home with him. Over the years, he built, fixed and renovated virtually every part of the Markham house. As his children grew up and established homes of their own, he passed along both his skills and his guidance, helping them and their spouses with repairs, renovations and the countless other jobs that come with owning a home.

Al was born in Toronto to Bertha and James Graham and grew up with his sister, Betty, who predeceased him. He is survived by his children Chris (Tara), Lauri (James), Nicole, and Andrea (Kelly), and by his grandchildren Sierra, Madison, Lucas, Alexis, Marryn, Kaitlyn and Cooper.

To them, he leaves much more than the things he built, fixed and maintained. He leaves the example of a man who was dependable without making a show of it, generous without asking for anything in return, and always there when the people he loved needed him.

Al did not feel the need to fill every silence. But his absence will be felt in the silence he leaves behind.
