Norman Corrigan Obituary

Norman Corrigan

The song has ended, but the melody lingers on…

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved

father Norman.  Norm passed peacefully on May 26, 2026 at the age of 98 (and 312 Days)

He was spirited and adventurous. He was a voracious reader of history. He loved movies

and music. He had an unfettered appetite for travel but his greatest love was for his

family. By his own definition of his life, he considered his family his greatest

achievement of all and was incredibly proud of his children, Norinne (Felix), Catherine

(Bruce), Jeanne (Todd), and John (Leslie), his seven grandchildren, six great-

grandchildren, his brothers and sisters and a legion of nieces and nephews in both

Canada and Scotland.

Born July 18, 1927 in Ayr, Scotland, he spent his formative years growing up in Scotland

where he trained as an auto mechanic. After completing his mandatory military service,

craving another adventure, he emigrated to Canada in 1951. As much as he loved his

homeland Scotland, he believed Canada to be the “greatest country on earth”.

Settling in Toronto he worked for A. V. Roe in engine assembly. On his days off he made

extra pocket money repairing transmissions on Rosedale Valley Road using the Bloor

Viaduct for rain protection. Partnering with friends in the early 1960’s, he built and

operated Premier Auto on Sunrise Avenue. After selling it in the mid-sixties he moved

on to a full-service Shell station in East York. In 1978 he built the Mechanic Shop in

Scarborough. Selling it in the early eighties and moving on to a Firestone Truck Stop in

Ajax. In the late 1980’s he whittled the scale of his business down to a small, one-man

shop on Nantucket Avenue.

He spent his retirement travelling where ever the notion took him. Winters were spent

with family in Texas. Spring and fall adventures took him to Scotland and Europe.

Summers were spent bike riding and fishing at the cottage in Haliburton.

He lived a big life, knowing no boundaries. It’s difficult to sum up his 98 years of

experience and adventures in so few words. Gregarious and outgoing, he was known by

one and all, his friendships lasted a lifetime. He answered to Norman, Norm, Norrie,

good old Norm, Dad, Grampa and Papa and always had time to stop and chat with

anyone and everyone.

We especially appreciated the loving care from Auntie May who always kept an eye on

him and to cousins Mary, Douglas, Neil, Grace and Karen who always stopped in for a

chat and a coffee. Thank you to his wonderful doctor and confidant, Dr. Charania and

his assistant Rekha.  Special thanks to the caring staff at Chartwell-Pickering and

Markham-Stouffville Hospital.

Visitation will be held June 26, 2026 at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home, Markham from

1:00 – 3:00 pm with a service at 3:00, followed by a Celebration of Life at Angus Glen

GC.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, TransCanada Trail or Markham-

Stouffville Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
