It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Walter on Monday, June 1, 2026, at the age of 97.

Walter will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Auguste (née Becherer), with whom he shared 72 wonderful years of marriage; his son, Ralph (Anca); his daughter, Rosemary (Leonhard); and his niece, Heide (Peter).He was a proud and devoted Opa to Alexandra, Karl, Oliver, Marcus (Mariah), Madison, Carly, and Colton, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

In 1953, Walter immigrated to Canada with the dream of building a better life for himself and his future family. A highly skilled precision tool and die maker, he quickly secured a position at the fledgling Magna Electronics machine shop. The exceptional craftsmanship he developed during his apprenticeship in Germany soon caught the attention of the company’s owners and later of major aviation and aerospace firms in Canada and the United States.

Walter went on to supervise shop floor operations, overseeing the fabrication of components for legendary projects such as the Avro Arrow, the NASA Lunar Module, and the Canadarm. He later became General Manager of Magna Electronics, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. Through his leadership, technical expertise, and unwavering commitment to excellence, he played an important role in the growth and success of Magna and its subsidiaries, helping lay the foundation for what would become Magna International, a globally recognized enterprise. Throughout his career, he earned the admiration and respect of colleagues and peers alike. Through hard work, dedication, and countless long hours, he provided for his family and built a strong foundation for future generations.

Known affectionately as “Mr. Fix-It,” Walter had an extraordinary ability to build, repair, and improve almost anything. Those talents were passed on to his son Ralph, who was rarely far from his side while growing up. He was also a patient teacher and mentor, generously sharing his knowledge with family and friends. He showed others how to use tools with confidence and care, fostered a love of fishing, aquariums, and gardening, and inspired a lifelong appreciation for learning, resourcefulness, and self-reliance.

Walter and Auguste enjoyed a rewarding retirement filled with travel, time spent at their beloved cottage which they built, and countless treasured moments with family. His creativity and skill were reflected in the model train layouts he built for his young son, sharing his craftsmanship and love of trains. Years later, he delighted his grandchildren by creating an even larger and more intricate train layout, delighting the entire family.

Walter’s legacy of hard work, perseverance, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family will live on in the lives he touched. He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and admiration by all who knew him.
