Wolfram Ruediger Markwardt von Kalben Obituary

Wolfram von Kalben (1946-2026) of Markham Ontario, passed away suddenly on the 17th of April 2026.Born in Friedberg Germany to Joachim and Erika, he grew up in Toronto Ontario and received degrees from both Wilfred Laurier University and University of Toronto as well as attending Teachers College.  Gifted with an ability to engage with and inspire others of all ages, Wolf spent 32 years as a teacher with the York District School Board bringing learning, inspiration and humour to countless students and staff.

As Wolf would often say, he wasn’t born to work. So after taking an early retirement, he devoted the remainder of his time to his family and living life as fully as possible. Wolf lived a big life. He loved deeply, laughed often, found joy in the big and the small, and gave everything of himself freely to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Nowhere was this more evident than in his enduring love for his wife Jackie, his partner in life, best friend and companion through their great adventure in this world.

Growing up on the shore of Lake Ontario, Wolf’s father inspired in him a love of boating that lasted his whole life. A long-time member of the Whitby Yacht Club he could often be found on summer days aboard his boat chatting with passers-by while preparing something or another onboard. Wolf was fascinated by life. He was as interested in exploring new places close to home as he was in exploring the jungles of India half a world away. Learning, the arts, and new ideas sustained him. As a past executive member of the U of T Alumni, Wolf could be seen often on campus and inside the hallways of Hart House, not to mention attending lectures, presentations and performances across Canada and the United States.

Wolf was active in his community. He valued the role and fraternity he found with the Markham-Union Lodge, the bowlers at Markham Lawn Bowling Club and his friends from regular bridge groups. He genuinely appreciated everyone and everywhere he happened to be, and found joy in everything. He embraced his roots in Germany. He loved to explore places on foot, whether new or familiar to him. It was not uncommon for him to quip “I could be happy living here” in whichever place he happened to find himself, as long as it was by a body of water.

He learned to pilot a plane above the clouds, to dive beneath the waves, and to sail upon them. But he was most passionate about family. His grandchildren were the light that fueled him. A gifted storyteller, he taught them about music, life, work and play.

Wolf is survived by his mother Erika von Kalben-Graffmann, his wife Jacquelyn von Kalben (Vanier), two children Mark (Lori) von Kalben, Paul (Lindsey) Foster von Kalben, three grandchildren James Foster von Kalben, Ben Foster von Kalben, and Ava von Kalben, many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He is predeceased by his father Joachim von Kalben and one grandchild Kai von Kalben.

Friends will be received at Dixon-Garland on Sunday, April 26th, 2026 for a reception visitation from 1-4pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
