The children of Dodey Spencer would like to share, that on January the 10th, our beloved mother passed away peacefully, with family at her side. Mom was just three weeks away from her 103rd birthday. She told us she was ready to be with Jim. Married in 1946, Mom and Dad shared 77 very happy years together before he died in 2024.
Dodey’s 5 children will all greatly miss her wise and gentle support: Anne ( Wayne), Jim (Janet), Bob (Laura), Nancy (Ron d.) and Cathy (Scott).
The grandchildren were lucky enough to grow into adulthood knowing their Grandmother’s character and love. Adrienne (Brock), Katie (James), Mike (Sarah), Jamie, Megan (Trevor), Nick (Sidney), Leigha, Chris(Caroline), Justin (Nicole), and Preston (Sarah). The number of great grandchildren has recently grown to 13 with the addition of 2 bouncing babies.
The family greatly appreciates all the kind remembrances of our mother . They have come from nieces, nephews, cousins, friends as well as the staff and residents where she lived. They have reinforced for us, her children, our mother’s legacy.
Mom was a prairie girl, born in Moosejaw and growing up in Regina as the 4th child of Charles and Myrtle Larter. These were the years of the depression and another world war. Times were tough, yet mom spoke very fondly of dances, sports and time with her beloved cousins on the farm in Plentywood, Montana. The war brought 2 significant events; the death of brother Josh and the arrival of our father into mom’s life . Dad boarded with the Larters as he went through RCAF pilot training and the rest is history.
Although mom was known for her warmth and kindness, she grew up with 6 brothers and was a bit of a tomboy. As such, she could throw a baseball and arm wrestle with the best.
This toughness certainly helped manage 5 children. As adults we couldn’t fathom how mom kept such a neat and clean house. Family vacations for 7, whether 2 weeks of camping or driving across the country were organizational feats worthy of a military manoeuvre, and mom did it all.
As her children grew up, Dodey and Jim shared a wealth of travel experiences both here and abroad .She played bridge, was a wiz at crossword puzzles and adored golfing. Their self built cottage was well used into mom’s early seventies and she could often be seen moving rocks to create a beach or transplanting trees. As the family expanded, get to gathers were frequent , with lots of shared stories and laughter.
The family are grateful for the caring staff and homey ambiance at Chartwell Rouge Valley. It made mom and dad’s stay there a happy one. Over her last days, Evergreen’s palliative services and Kelly’s Homecare made Dodey and her family more comfortable.
Mom was universally loved and immensely grateful for her life and family. She will live on in our memories and now she is with dad. Together forever .
