It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Jean Alice Hanson, 91, at Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry. After a long and full life, Barbara was ready to reunite with her beloved husband, Gordon, who passed in January of this past year after 72 beautiful years of marriage. Those who knew them often said their love was something rare—deep, steady, and lifelong—and it brings comfort knowing they are together once again.
Barbara was the cherished mother of Sheryl (Mark), Gale (Bruce), and Gordie (deceased). Her life’s greatest devotion was to her family. She dedicated herself to raising her children with warmth, support, and the guidance of her own parents and in-laws. Family was the centre of her world, and she carried that love forward through every stage of her life.
Small in stature but mighty in spirit, Barbara was full of spunk and had a zest for life. Anyone who met her felt an immediate sense of warmth and joy. Her smile and genuine positivity made every person feel welcomed and valued.
Barbara was deeply involved in her community. She was a long time member of the Centenary hospital Auxiliary and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Markham offering support, kindness, and compassion wherever she could. As time went on, her focus turned wholeheartedly to her grandchildren—Sara, Adam, Heather, Sandra, Kristen, and Andrew—who brought her endless pride. She loved hosting family Christmas gatherings, cheering on every one of their activities, and staying constantly on the go.
In her later years with Gordon, their days were brightened by the visits and photos of their eleven great- grandchildren, whom they lovingly bragged about to friends and staff at Douglas Crossing. Together, they embraced every moment with gratitude and affection.
Barbara will always be remembered as a joyful, loving, spirited woman whose presence made the world a little brighter. And above all, she will be remembered as the cherished wife of Gordon—the person who loved her more than anything. Their love was extraordinary, a steady, faithful love that truly carried them “through the years.” And now they are at peace, side by side once more.
In memory of Barbara, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. A private family service will take place at a later time.
