Obituary of Bill Dyer
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Joseph Dyer. Bill passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025 at Oak Ridges Hospice. He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Nancy (Higgins) Dyer and survived by his children Mark (Marletha), Tim (Trisha), and Jennifer (Jason); as well as by his six grandchildren: Daniel Dyer, Jakob and Ben Hutzul-Dyer, and Will, Rowan, and Georgia Hayes.
Bill was born on March 2, 1940, in St. Catharine’s, Ontario to John and Margaret Dyer, and is survived by his brother, David. After the death of his father, the family moved to Halifax in 1951, where he spent the next 30 years. He attended St. Patrick High School before moving on to St. Mary’s University and the Technical Institute of Nova Scotia (TUNS), attaining a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1965.
Bill married Nancy Higgins in 1964 and the two of them settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He worked in a variety of roles with Imperial Oil for nearly 30 years, moving to New Brunswick, back to Dartmouth, and finally Toronto with this company. He retired from Imperial Oil in 1992 and went on to work in a consulting role with a variety of Ontario municipalities for the remainder of his career, a role he greatly enjoyed. He retired in 2002.
Retirement agreed with Bill. He and Nancy travelled and were engaged in the lives of their grandchildren. They were active in St. Patrick’s parish in a variety of ways, notably as RCIA leaders and sponsors. Bill joined the Markham Lion’s Club at this time and spent many years volunteering in the community with both the Lions and at Markham Stouffville Hospital. He was an avid golfer and curler as well, trading in one favourite sport for another as the seasons changed.
Bill will be greatly missed by his family and many friends in both Halifax and Markham.
