Obituary of Wilhelmus Theodorus Backer
Wilhelmus (Bill) Backer, beloved father and Opa, passed away peacefully at Chartwell Gibson Long Term Care (LTC) Residence in Toronto on June 20 th , 2025.
Dad happily celebrated his 96 th birthday on March 22 nd with his family, fellow residents and the wonderful staff of Gibson. Dad peacefully slipped away to join his beloved wife Anna C. Conijn (1931-1994). He is remembered with love and gratitude by his family: Frank (Margaret Marinos), Mary-Lou (Tom McGivney) and grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Aidan and Maria. Dad was a big man, both in stature (6’4) and heart. He will be remembered as hard working, fun- loving, generous and kind.
He was a family man and people person. He was happiest surrounded by friends and family. He delighted in playing dominoes and cards with his grandchildren as well as the many hands of Klaverjas he played at Holland Christian Homes (HCH) with friends. When he wasn’t spending time making things in the woodshop to donate to charity, he would be tirelessly tending to the garden, growing and harvesting vegetables to give away. He lived independently at HCH until the end of 2024 at which time his Alzheimer's progressed to the point where he had to move.
The family is extremely grateful for the love, compassionate care and support he received from the Palliative Care doctors and wonderful staff at Gibson LTC Residence. Cremation has taken place, and the family will hold private gatherings in places special to Bill. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Cancer Society, Liver Foundation or Alzheimer’s Society; charities close to Bill’s heart.
