Ingrid Bryan
25 th January, 1943 – 30 th April, 2025

With great sadness I must record the death of my beloved wife Ingrid. My partner, soulmate and best friend for more than sixty years, I will miss her immensely, every minute of every day. She will also be missed greatly by our adored children, Karin and Feargus, their respective partners, Conrad and Annabelle, our grandchildren, Tristan, Imogen and Anaïs, and by a wide circle of friends and relatives.

Ingrid was an amazing woman, who delighted in life. She loved music and literature and took great pleasure in nature’s minutiae: the peeping of tree frogs, the cries of loons and whippoorwills and the carpet of spring flowers in the forest. An enthusiastic traveller, she visited most of the United States as a 19-year old, and together we enjoyed all seven continents and more than eighty countries. However, nothing gave her greater pleasure than family Christmases at our Haliburton cottage, and Midsummer celebrations at our cottage in Sweden.

Born in Kiruna in Arctic Sweden, Ingrid spent her early life and education in southern Sweden. After completing a BA in Sheffield, we emigrated to Canada where she completed her MA and PhD in Economics at the University of Alberta. A talented professor, administrator and a brilliant teacher, she spent most of her career at Ryerson University, Toronto. Successively chair of Economics and Dean of Arts, she established BA and MA programmes in Economics, laid the foundation for the PhD programme in Economics and published several influential economics books. As Professor Emerita she published an important book on global international resource sustainability : Are We Running Out?

Ingrid is irreplaceable and will leave a deep gulf of sadness, but we are profoundly lucky to have had her with us for more than eight decades.
