What is Aquamation?

Aquamation is a method of final disposition that is available.  The scientific name for this water-based process is alkaline hydrolysis.  It is the same process that occurs as part of nature’s course when a body is laid to rest in the soil.  A combination of gentle water flow, temperature, and alkalinity are used to accelerate the breakdown of organic materials. Aquamation is an eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation or burial, leaving behind sterile bone fragments and 20–30% more remains than fire, with 90% less energy usage and no direct greenhouse gas emissions.

Aquamation FAQ

How does it work?
The body is placed in a vessel, filled with 95% water and 5% alkali (potassium hydroxide), and heated to 200--300F under pressure.

Is it safe?
Yes, it creates a sterile fluid (amino acids, sugars, nutrients) and sterile bone fragments.

Is it better than cremation?
It is considered more environmentally friendly, using 1/10th of the energy of flame cremation. It produces no emissions, is 100% mercury-free and there’s no need for embalming chemicals or a casket

Can I have a service?
Yes, viewings and services can occur before the process.

What happens to the water?
The nutrient-rich water is returned to the ecosystem via the water treatment process.
